Trong một cuộc phỏng vấn sâu gần đây, Peter Schiff, một nhà kinh tế học nổi tiếng và là người ủng hộ vàng, đã tiết lộ mối lo ngại ngày càng tăng về sự ổn định của đồng đô la Mỹ.
Schiff gợi ý rằng các nhà đầu tư nên tránh xa đồng đô la Mỹ vì “chẳng bao lâu nữa sẽ có một đợt lũ lụt khiến người ta phải gấp rút thoát khỏi đồng đô la”.
Nợ quốc gia của Hoa Kỳ hiện đã tăng vọt lên hơn 33 nghìn tỷ USD, và đối với Schiff, hậu quả của việc này sẽ sớm được thể hiện khi tiền lãi trở thành khoản chi tiêu chính của chính phủ.
Schiff nói thêm rằng tính đến cuối năm “lãi suất nợ sẽ là khoản chi phí lớn nhất mà chính phủ phải gánh chịu… Cuối cùng, đó sẽ là khoản chi phí duy nhất mà chúng tôi có. Nếu điều này tiếp tục, sẽ không còn tiền để chi cho bất cứ thứ gì ngoài tiền lãi và rõ ràng là chúng ta không thể đạt được mục tiêu đó.”
Nhà kinh tế học nói thêm rằng một “cuộc khủng hoảng lớn” đang sắp xảy ra. Ông cũng lưu ý rằng một số quốc gia đã bắt đầu áp dụng các loại tiền tệ khác trong thương mại quốc tế, điều này có thể làm giảm thêm sức mạnh của đồng đô la Mỹ.
Theo lời của ông, việc đồng đô la được vũ khí hóa để đóng băng tài sản của Nga sau khi nước này tiến hành cuộc xâm lược Ukraine là một “lời cảnh tỉnh to lớn đối với mọi quốc gia trên thế giới”. Schiff nói:
Điều đó đã gửi một tin nhắn. ‘Hãy thoát khỏi đồng đô la! Nếu không, bạn sẽ ở vào tình thế rất dễ bị tổn thương vì Mỹ có thể trừng phạt bạn vì sử dụng đồng đô la”.
