Gary Shilling, nhà kinh tế trưởng đầu tiên của Merrill Lynch và là người sáng lập một công ty tư vấn 45 tuổi, đã vẽ ra một triển vọng kinh tế ảm đạm cho Hoa Kỳ.
Ông Gary Shilling được ví như “nhà tiên tri” của Phố Wall vì từng dự báo đúng những diễn biến lớn của thị trường chứng khoán trong 50 năm qua.
Shilling tin rằng Hoa Kỳ hiện đang suy thoái. Shilling trích dẫn Cục Nghiên cứu Kinh tế Quốc gia (NBER), một tổ chức tư nhân thường tuyên bố chính thức suy thoái vài tháng sau khi chúng bắt đầu.
“Tôi nghĩ hiện tại có lẽ chúng ta đang trong thời kỳ suy thoái. NBER đợi cho đến khi họ nhận được tất cả dữ liệu, bản sửa đổi và mọi thứ khác. Một khi họ thực hiện thông báo đó, nó sẽ không còn hữu ích nữa”, ông nói.
Ông cũng bình luận rằng khó có thể hạ cánh mềm. Hạ cánh mềm được định nghĩa là khi Fed tăng lãi suất mục tiêu và sau đó hạ lãi suất mà không xảy ra suy thoái.
“Hạ cánh mềm là cực kỳ hiếm. Chỉ có một trường hợp duy nhất trong suốt thời kỳ hậu chiến, đó là vào giữa những năm 90. Dự đoán về một cuộc hạ cánh mềm là thách thức lịch sử”, Shilling nói thêm.
Trong khi đó, ông dự đoán nền kinh tế sẽ tiếp tục suy yếu và có dấu hiệu suy thoái kinh tế gia tăng.
Nhà phân tích cho rằng “những ai nghĩ rằng sẽ có đợt cắt giảm lãi suất đột ngột và nền kinh tế Mỹ hạ cánh nhẹ nhàng sẽ thất vọng”.
Shilling cho biết ông không kỳ vọng Fed sẽ cắt giảm lãi suất cho đến giữa năm sau.
