Văn phòng Luật sư Hoa Kỳ cho biết vào ngày 31 tháng 10 rằng Elmaani – còn được biết đến với bí danh “Bruno Block” – đã bị kết án tù sau khi nhận tội vào ngày 6 tháng 4, trong đó anh ta thừa nhận đã bí mật đúc và bán token Pearl trong khi không nộp thuế thu nhập.
Elmaani thừa nhận đã gây thất thu thuế hơn 5,5 triệu USD.
Từ tháng 9 đến tháng 10 năm 2017, Elmaani đã quảng cáo một loại tiền điện tử có tên Pearl (PRL), được tiếp thị như một cách để các nhà đầu tư mua dữ liệu trên nền tảng lưu trữ dữ liệu có tên là Oyster Protocol.
Tuy nhiên, Elmaani đã bí mật đúc một lượng lớn token PRL mới và bán chúng ra thị trường để thu lợi cá nhân vào tháng 10 năm 2018.
Tòa án phát hiện ra rằng vào năm 2018, Elmaani đã chi hơn 10 triệu USD cho nhiều du thuyền, 1,6 triệu USD cho một công ty composite sợi carbon, hàng trăm nghìn USD tại các cửa hàng đồ gia dụng và hơn 700.000 USD để mua hai ngôi nhà.
Ngoài bản án 4 năm tù, Elmaani còn bị kết án một năm tù treo có giám sát và phải trả 5,5 triệu USD tiền bồi thường.
