Thành viên mới của BRICS là Argentina đã thanh toán bằng đồng Nhân dân tệ của Trung Quốc để thanh toán khoản thanh toán cho IMF chứ không phải bằng đô la Mỹ.
Argentina đang thiếu hụt đồng đô la Mỹ dự trữ do nguồn cung tiền tệ trong nước vẫn khan hiếm. Vì vậy, Ngân hàng Trung ương Argentina đã phải dùng đến cách trả một khoản tiền lớn để thanh toán cho IMF bằng đồng Nhân dân tệ và một phần bằng đô la Mỹ.
Reuters đưa tin, thành viên BRICS Argentina đã trả một phần trong số 2,6 tỷ USD cho IMF bằng đồng Nhân dân tệ Trung Quốc chứ không phải đô la Mỹ . Argentina đã hoàn thành khoản thanh toán tháng 10 bằng tài sản dự trữ của IMF, được gọi là quyền rút vốn đặc biệt (SDR). Ngoài ra, giao dịch ngoại hối hàng ngày bằng đồng Nhân dân tệ cũng tăng lên 28% ở Argentina.

Sự phát triển này cho thấy các nước BRICS đang thực hiện nghiêm túc các sáng kiến phi đô la hóa. BRICS đang sử dụng đồng Nhân dân tệ của Trung Quốc cho thương mại và các hình thức thanh toán khác thay vì đồng đô la Mỹ.
Ngoài ra, quốc gia này có thể tăng cường thanh toán bằng đồng Nhân dân tệ trong những tuần tới. Argentina phải trả khoản lãi 700 triệu USD cho IMF trong tháng này và quốc gia này có thể phải phụ thuộc vào đồng Nhân dân tệ của Trung Quốc một lần nữa. Động thái này khiến đồng đô la Mỹ gặp khó khăn khi các nước BRICS đang củng cố đồng tiền của mình thông qua sự khan hiếm.
Ngân hàng Trung ương Argentina xác nhận Trung Quốc đã thông qua hạn mức hoán đổi tiền tệ trị giá 6,5 tỷ USD, tương đương 18 tỷ Nhân dân tệ. Ngoài ra, các tập đoàn đa quốc gia ở Argentina, bao gồm cả thương hiệu thiết bị gia dụng Whirlpool của Mỹ cũng đang sử dụng đồng Nhân dân tệ để nhập khẩu.
Chính phủ Argentina cho phép các công ty Fortune 500 trong nước mở tài khoản ngân hàng mới để giao dịch Nhân dân tệ Trung Quốc.
